Explore Holy Islands on Static Caravan Holidays in Wales

Static caravan holidays in Wales are the less expensive way of exploring this most historic of countries in the British Isles.

Holidaymakers return time and again, not least for the stunning countryside. Wales has a diverse and truly beautiful landscape, interspersed with mountains and valleys. It is a walker or climber’s paradise.  Views from the summit of Snowdonia are staggering. On a clear day, you can see Scotland, Ireland and England depending on the direction you are standing in.

There is no need to climb the mountain if that’s not your thing since you can take a train journey on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. On the trip, you’ll see views of the Snowdonia National Park in all its spectacular glory.  Walking through the park you come across glistening lakes and many species of wildlife.

There are 3 National Parks in Wales including Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire Coast and the Brecon Beacons.

Famous Holy Islands

There are also several islands you can visit taking boats out from all along the Welsh coast. These include famous holy islands in Wales two of which are detailed below:

Caldey Island

Located off the South West coast of Wales,  regular boats go out to the island from Tenby Harbour.  For more information about dates and times click on Caldey Island boat trips. It takes less than 30 minutes to get there.

Cistercian monks have lived, prayed and worked on the island for over a thousand years. The tranquillity of this holy island is evident from the moment you set foot on it.

There are many religious buildings of historic interest on the island including Caldey Abbey, The Old Priory, St Illtyd’s Church and St David’s Church.  The 1829 lighthouse is also well worth a visit having been maintained for all those years and still in operation today.

Refreshments are available in the island’s tea gardens and souvenirs from the Post Office and Museum. The perfume made by the monks is worth buying as an unusual gift. Fudge, Shortbread and chocolate, handmade on the island, can be purchased from the Gift Shop.  Click on Caldey Island for more information and check out the video below to see what you can expect to find there.

Bardsey Island

Bardsey Island can be reached by boat from Pwllheli or Aberdaron.  Christians have made pilgrimages to this island since the 6th Century following the establishment of a monastery, constructed by St. Cadfan.  If a Christian visited the island 3 times it was considered a holy act equivalent to that of a pilgrimage to Rome.

Very little of the monastery has survived but since Bardsey has become a nature reserve, you can view a variety of birds there as well as a grey seal colony.
