Caldey Island

Cistercian monks have lived, prayed and worked on the island for over a thousand years. The tranquillity of this holy island is evident from the moment you set foot on it.
There are many religious buildings of historic interest on the island including Caldey Abbey, The Old Priory, St Illtyd’s Church and St David’s Church. The 1829 lighthouse is also well worth a visit having been maintained for all those years and still in operation today.
Refreshments are available in the island’s tea gardens and souvenirs from the Post Office and Museum. The perfume made by the monks is worth buying as an unusual gift. Fudge, Shortbread and chocolate, handmade on the island, can be purchased from the Gift Shop. Bardsey Island
Bardsey Island can be reached by boat from Pwllheli or Aberdaron. Christians have made pilgrimages to this island since the 6th Century following the establishment of a monastery, constructed by St. Cadfan. If a Christian visited the island 3 times it was considered a holy act equivalent to that of a pilgrimage to Rome.
Very little of the monastery has survived but since Bardsey has become a nature reserve, you can view a variety of birds there as well as a grey seal colony.
